Music is a very powerful medium to unlock memories and has become an increasingly key feature of dementia care. This project was developed to bring back musical memories from the youthful days of people with dementia trying to associate this music with their social lives.
We collected memories of music and social occasions, and a playlist of recalled songs, which were then scripted and handed over to the musicians. A partnership project, it brought together DCC Community Arts, professional actors, directors and young musicians from Durham Music Service, working together with Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friendly Communities and Beamish Museum.
The songs were performed in the participating care homes, then on Thursday 18 July 2019, Dancehall Days was presented at the Welfare Hall at Beamish. Over 120 people attended the event, including all the participants, their families and carers. This short film documents the project.
